This seminar considered the future for Initial Teacher Education (ITE) in England and explored the shape of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) following the Department for Education announcement that from September 2019 there will be a newly-strengthened accreditation. Delegates assessed recommendations made in the Department for Education commissioned, A framework of core content for Initial Teacher Training (ITT), on supporting teacher trainers and trainees to have a better understanding of good ITT content. Further sessions examined plans outlined by the Government to equip new teachers entering the classroom with practical behaviour management skills and a better understanding of children’s emotional wellbeing and special educational needs. Additionally, following the Government welcoming recommendations made in the report, National standards for school-based ITT mentors, the role and value of school-based mentoring for trainee teachers was also discussed. The conference was also an opportunity to discuss priorities for reform of the QTS accreditation and the likely impact of reform on the nature of the NQT year and ITT uptake. Delegates also considered the main factors to be taken into account in the designing of teacher apprenticeships to ensure they are of maximum benefit to both schools and pupils.
