At a time of high youth unemployment and with business groups expressing concerns around the skills of school leavers, this timely seminar brought together key policymakers from across Government with stakeholders including young people's groups, schools, colleges, local authorities, careers advisers and employers to discuss policy and practical steps that can be taken to improve young people's readiness for work. It was scheduled as Government undertook a review of the range of training and support programmes available for young people seeking employment.
The implementation of Government's new pre-apprenticeship programme for young people, Traineeships, was a focal point for discussion. Delegates assessed the role that careers education and work experience should play in 16-19 pathways and prior study in the context of the skills and attributes employers are seeking from recruits, now and into the future.
