Taking place with postgraduate student numbers at record highs and having increased by 22% after the introduction of postgraduate loans, this seminar examined the opportunities for universities to expand PGT provision, challenges posed for widening participation and capacity if demand continues to rise and the impact of loans on tuition fee pricing strategies.
Delegates discussed the current successes of postgraduate loans, with a keynote address from Paul Williams, Deputy Director, Student Funding Policy, Department for Education.
Further sessions covered the challenges for delivering loans, the potential for rising costs for students enrolling and whether new finance could improve access to postgraduate study for those from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Additional sessions also focused on quality assurance in postgraduate education, including discussion on the potential implementation of a ‘postgraduate TEF’, securing a high standard of student experience and improving employability outcomes for graduates. Chris Millward, Director (Policy), Research, Education and Knowledge Exchange Directorate, HEFCE also gave a keynote address on the next steps for postgraduate taught education, assessing the future challenges and opportunities.
