Next steps for diagnostics and pathology - innovation, collaboration and standards

This conference will consider the next steps for diagnostics and pathology in England - looking at supporting innovation, rolling out networks and developing standards.

It follows the commitment in the NHS Long Term Plan to implement pathology networks across England by 2021 and diagnostic imaging networks by 2023.

The conference will provide a timely opportunity to discuss the use of technology, artificial intelligence and genomics to improve the diagnosis of disease.

The agenda includes keynote addresses from Professor Jo Martin, President, Royal College of Pathologists and Professor Sir Mark Caulfield, Chief Scientist, Genomics England.

The agenda in summary

  • Rolling out imaging and pathology networks:
    • Integration, utilising shared resources and the role of technology; and
    • Consolidating pathology services, and supporting staff recruitment, development and retention.
  • Improving diagnostic times for cancer and learning from Rapid Diagnostic Centres;
  • Accelerating the diagnostic process - research funding, developing standards and upgrading infrastructure;
  • Innovation in diagnostics and pathology - utilising data and artificial intelligence, encouraging uptake and developing personalised treatments; and
  • Evaluating diagnostic technologies and assessing barriers to adoption.

Shortly after every Westminster Health Forum seminar, a briefing document is produced. This is distributed to all delegates on the day as well as to our policymaker contacts in government, and to stakeholders more widely.

A seminar publication provides a timely record of proceedings, and acts as a guide to the latest thinking on current policy issues for those unable to be at the event.
