This conference examined priorities for improving healthcare provision for women in light of challenges posed by the pandemic - as well as wider discussion around tackling the UK’s gender health gap, including within research, awareness of gendered health concerns, and wider inequalities.

It was an opportunity to examine key themes emerging from the Government’s consultation as it developed the Women’s Health Strategy, which aims to address the gender health gap - and to consider priorities for women’s health in the context of other significant developments, including the wider health reforms proposed in the Health and Care Bill.

We are pleased to have been able to include keynote sessions with Professor Louise Howard, NIHR Research Professor in Women's Mental Health and NIHR Senior Investigator; and Section of Women's Mental Health, Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience, King's College London; Edward Morris, President, Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists; and Mehrunisha Suleman, Senior Research Fellow and Lead, The Health Foundation.

Areas for discussion in the agenda included:

  • priorities for the Women’s Health Strategy and its implementation
  • meeting women’s health needs and addressing barriers to delivery
  • the impact of COVID-19 and public health inequalities on women’s health and key issues for recovery in women’s services
  • addressing the impact of racism in maternity care
  • the way forward for women’s health research
