This conference discussed next steps for stroke care, treatment and rehabilitation.

With the publication of the National Clinical Guideline for Stroke, it was an opportunity to discuss priorities for improving the quality of stroke care, and the commissioning and delivery of services in the context of pressures facing the NHS, as well as changes in the healthcare landscape due to the development of new integrated care systems.

Delegates evaluated progress and performance on stroke treatment within the NHS Long Term Plan so far, in light of recent thrombectomy targets being missed.

Discussion considered lessons learned so far from the setting up of the Integrated Stroke Delivery Network, and future opportunities for designing effective local stroke pathways.

Stakeholders and policymakers also assessed latest thinking on improving patient outcomes in primary and early stroke care, secondary care, and emergency and specialist services.

Further sessions examined priorities for service recovery as the NHS faces post-pandemic pressures, as well as key issues around prevention and rehabilitation, addressing emergency care challenges, and developing personalised care for stroke patients.

We are pleased to have been able to include a keynote session with Juliet Bouverie, Chief Executive Officer, Stroke Association.

Overall, areas for discussion included:

  • ISDNs: progress, performance and future priorities - embedding community, rehabilitation and remote services into networks - developing local stroke pathways
  • primary and early care: improving awareness - early diagnosis and management - caregiver and family engagement - assessing options for the use of AI and new technology
  • emergency care: stroke recognition - accelerating processes and transport - telemedicine - improving patient outcomes through the role of first response
  • secondary care and rehabilitation: improving patient outcomes and quality of life after treatment - specialist services, psychological support and personalisation - integrating community care
  • thrombectomy delivery: addressing variation in access - future goals
  • policy: next steps for improving the delivery of stroke services - long-term priorities

The conference was an opportunity for stakeholders to consider the issues alongside key policy officials who attended from the DHSC; Department of Health, NI; DWP; HMPPS; MHRA; and the Welsh Government - as well as parliamentary pass-holders from The House of Commons.
