Priorities for implementing compulsory relationships and sex education (RSE) in schools in England was the focus of this seminar as Government conducted its consultation on the RSE curriculum - looking at what topics parents, teachers, and young people feel should be incorporated in the new school guidelines. The consultation is being led by Ian Bauckham, Chief Executive Officer, Tenax Schools Trust, who delivered a keynote address at the conference on the DfE priorities for RSE.
Delegates considered what measures are necessary to ensure that all pupils have access to high quality RSE that takes account of age and religious background, as well as priorities for designing an RSE curriculum inclusive of LGBT+ and SEND groups. The agenda looked at what can be learnt from existing examples of best practice in teaching RSE, including in parental engagement to maximise the reach of RSE lessons and the involvement of young people in curriculum design.
Further sessions considered priorities for equipping the teaching workforce with the skills and confidence necessary to teach RSE, as well as examples of best practice in RSE and PSHE teaching.
