This conference followed the call from the former Education Secretary for the school system to move to a single model that uses multi-academy trusts (MATs) as its foundation.
It was an opportunity to consider this proposal, assess practicalities and next steps, and evaluate its potential for supporting and improving underperforming schools - including the ‘try before you buy’ scheme to allow maintained schools to trial membership of a particular MAT through Trust Partnerships.
We also expected discussion on governance in MATs, best practice in their management and operation, and their role in driving up standards.
We are pleased to have been able to include keynote sessions on core issues, including:
- The school system in England in the wake of the pandemic - Mark Blois, Head of Education, Browne Jacobson
- The future positioning of single academy trusts and local authority schools - Robin Bevan, former President, National Education Union; and Headteacher, Southend High School for Boys
- Considerations for creating an academy trust-based school system - from Leora Cruddas, Chief Executive Officer, Confederation of School Trusts
- The faith academy trust pilot programme and supporting high achievement in faith schools - from Nigel Genders, Chief Education Officer, The Church of England Education Office
- Policy priorities for the school system going forward - from Dominic Herrington, National Schools Commissioner, Department for Education
