This conference examined priorities for developing the UK’s research workforce.
The discussion took place in the context of the Government’s UK Innovation Strategy and R&D people and culture strategy, and the publication of the UKRI Strategy 2022 to 2027.
It was an opportunity to discuss strategies to build the workforce needed to deliver in key research areas including life sciences, space and the transition towards net-zero and green technologies.
Areas for discussion included:
- inclusion and access - widening pathways into research
- recruitment - tackling skills mismatches & shortages ◦ strategies for filling high-demand roles
- technical staff - recruitment ◦ professional development ◦ recognition
- leadership - developing the interdisciplinary & management skills of current staff
- culture - developing positive, inclusive & diverse research workplaces
We were pleased to be able to include keynote contributions from Professor Melanie Welham, Executive Chair, Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council; and People, Culture and Talent Champion, UKRI; Professor Sir John Holman, Chair, UKRI Talent Commission; Dr Jeisson Cardenas-Rubio, Research Fellow, Institute for Employment Research, University of Warwick; and Benjamin Martinez Sanchis, Policy and Advocacy Officer, Coimbra Group.
The conference was an opportunity for stakeholders to consider the issues alongside key policy officials who attended from: BEIS; the OLS; Department for the Economy, NI; DHSC; Dstl; DWP; HMRC; the IPO; UKSA; and The Scottish Government; and the Welsh Government.
