This conference focused on policy to tackle obesity in England, along with its implementation and impact.

Stakeholders and policymakers examined latest developments and initiatives, as well as the likely effects of the measures taken on consumers, public health, and the food and drink industry.

Taking place in the context of the Government’s Tackling Obesity strategy, we also expected discussion on its future direction, with speculation that some measures may not be implemented.

Delegates also considered the wider policy landscape impacting obesity reduction - including the Levelling Up White Paper, the Food Strategy White Paper and the developing role of preventative healthcare.

Sessions in the agenda looked at:

  • strategy implementation - including priorities for the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities in leading improvements to public health at both national and local levels
  • impact and outcomes - outstanding implementation issues for the strategy, and likely outcomes and impact on stakeholders
  • health inequalities - including opportunities for addressing key challenges through the development of a new health disparities white paper
  • collaboration - joint working and coordination between local health services and local government, including exercise provision and diet management
  • clinical interventions - their developing role, with NICE approving the use of semaglutide injections alongside weight management programmes

We are pleased to have been able to include keynotes sessions with Professor Jonathan Valabhji, National Clinical Director for Diabetes and Obesity, NHS; and Professor Paul Gately, Professor of Exercise and Obesity, Leeds Beckett University; and Chief Executive, MoreLife.

Further contributions came from the Advertising Association; the Behavioural Insights Team; Birmingham City Council; Blackpool Central West Primary Care Network; The British Sandwich and Food to Go Association; EXi; the Food and Drink Federation; Kantar; Newcastle City Council; Starbucks Coffee Company; Washingborough Academy and TastEd.

The conference was an opportunity for stakeholders to consider the issues alongside key policy officials who  attended from DHSC; the FSA; the OHID; OLS; Defra; the DfE; Food Standards Scotland; UKHSA; DoH, Ireland; DIT; DLUHC; The Scottish Government; and the Welsh Government - as well as parliamentary pass-holders from the House of Lords.
