This conference discussed the way forward for aligning the life sciences sector with policy ambitions for achieving net zero.

Stakeholders and policymakers looked at strategic priorities and next steps, including best practice and how challenges are being addressed by major organisations in life sciences.

It came as the sector addresses challenges amidst a range of policy developments including the Net Zero Strategy, the Life Sciences Vision, and the Delivering a 'Net Zero' National Health Service strategy, which sets out an NHS commitment to reaching net zero by 2040.

With the Procurement Bill progressing through Parliament, delegates assessed the way forward for reducing environmental impact across the supply chain, how this can be accurately measured, and the support that will be needed following the change to NHS supplier contracts in April 2023, as well as procurement strategies in 2024.

We are pleased to have been able to include keynote sessions with Juliette White, Global SHE & Operations Sustainability, AstraZeneca; and Karen Taylor, Director, Deloitte Centre for Health Solutions; Richard Charter, VP Market Access, Alira Health; Jamie Foster, Partner, Hill Dickinson; Laura Kelly, Director of Sustainability Practice, PricewaterhouseCoopers; and Madi Choudhury-Iqbal, Medical Affairs Lead, Chiesi.

Further areas for discussion in the agenda included:

  • the Sustainable Markets Initiative: examining the goals of the SMI Health Systems Task Force - how it can best support the sector - setting and reaching net zero goals
  • research, innovation, and clinical trials: building sustainability and net zero strategies into the design and delivery of R&I - priorities for measurement and monitoring
  • digital health and packaging: recyclability - waste management initiatives - balancing patient experience, safety, and sustainability - driving adoption in industry and the NHS
  • public health: supporting the development of healthier communities - understanding and addressing the broader impacts of emissions on population health

The conference was an opportunity for stakeholders to consider the issues alongside key policy officials who attended from the Cabinet Office; DBT; Defra; DHSC; DSIT; DfT; Health Service Executive, Ireland; MHRA; OLS; The Scottish Government; and the Welsh Government.
