This conference focused on priorities, practicalities, and next steps for achieving net-zero health services in the UK.

Areas for discussion included latest developments, opportunities and challenges in:

  • the estate - energy efficiencies and waste management
  • energy - decarbonisation and use of renewables
  • infrastructure - including sustainable design
  • the supply chain - options for reducing emissions
  • measuring progress - latest thinking and approaches

Delegates assessed initial progress and next steps following the Delivering a ‘Net Zero’ National Health Service strategy - which committed to cutting emissions that the NHS can control to net-zero by 2040, and those that the NHS can influence to net-zero by 2045 - as well as the UK health services net-zero pledge at COP26.

The agenda also looked at wider issues for sustainability in care delivery and public health, including:

  • workforce support and training - developing care practices and pathways
  • innovative technologies - opportunities to streamline care delivery whilst also reducing carbon footprint
  • ICS - the role of integrated care systems in sustainability across local areas
  • public health - identifying the potential impacts of climate change - next steps for strategy development

We are pleased to have been able to include keynote sessions with Dr Natalia Kurek, Senior Clinical Lead, Greener NHS Programme, NHS England and NHS Improvement; Sonia Roschnik, International Climate Policy Director, Healthcare Without Harm; and Juliet Kenny, Scientific Adviser, Science Policy and Research Programme, NICE.

There were also contributions from: the ABHI; Arup; AstraZeneca; the Centre for Sustainable Healthcare; Global Action Plan; the Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust; the UK Health Alliance on Climate Change; Wates Construction Group; and the World Health Organisation Collaborating Centre on Global Change and Health.

The conference was also an opportunity for stakeholders to consider the issues alongside key policy officials who attended from the DHSC; OHID; Department of Health NI; CCS; DAERA, NI; DIT; NAO; The Scottish Government; and the Welsh Government.
