This conference examined the future of the UK international research partnerships.

It came as the Government launches a range of initiatives to develop research partnerships outside Horizon Europe, and follows the announcement of the new International Science Partnerships Fund and an international agreement with Switzerland on science and research.

The conference brought together stakeholders, funders and policymakers to assess priorities for international research strategy, and was an opportunity to consider:

  • areas in which the UK can lead internationally
  • the alignment of domestic policy and funding with international objectives
  • the UK’s evolving relationship with Europe
  • the development of KPIs for the UK’s international collaboration and engagement

Delegates discussed what is needed from UK policy to effectively position and promote UK research organisations in a developing international landscape, including the design and development of the new International Science Partnerships Fund, as well as priorities for further programmes and funding for fellowships, research consortia, and alternatives to Horizon Europe schemes.

Further sessions looked at strategies and best practice for implementation of partnerships, how the UK can generate impact and best contribute to addressing challenges in specific geographic areas, and opportunities for collaboration with new and emerging partners in the Global South.

  • strategy: the UK’s global role - leadership areas - aligning domestic policy and funding with international objectives - KPIs - the future relationship with Europe
  • international partnerships: key technologies - fellowships and mobility - networks and consortia - international programmes - funding - Horizon Plan B
