This conference assessed the role of the independent sector in the future of healthcare delivery, and opportunities for collaboration between the NHS and independent sectors.

It took place with ministers considering policy and spending priorities, and with concerns highlighted in the media on costs of use of staff and facilities from the private sector - and against the backdrop of:

  • ongoing reforms to the healthcare system, such as those proposed in the Integration White Paper and Build Back Better plan for health and social care
  • the refreshed NHS Long Term Plan, expected later this year
  • plans outlined in NHS Planning and Operational Guidance 2022/23 for independent commissioned services to play a key role in integrated care systems

Overall, areas for discussion included:

  • trends: the current market for private healthcare services in the UK - uptake by the public, businesses and the NHS - prospects going forward
  • policy options: the future for independent health sector involvement in the NHS - implications for services, care quality, access, the health and social care workforce, and the public
  • role: key areas for commissioned services in NHS care delivery - balance between tactical and ongoing reliance - maximising positive impact on delivery and costs - coordination
  • patients: choice and access to quality healthcare - priorities for NHS resourcing and recruitment - aligning regulatory and professional standards across the independent sector and NHS
  • clinical research: challenges and opportunities for NHS and independent sector collaboration - supporting innovation - improving access to new treatments - building the evidence base

We are pleased to have been able to include keynote contributions from David Hare, Chief Executive, Independent Health Provider Network; and William Laing, Director, LaingBuisson.

The conference was an opportunity for stakeholders to consider the issues alongside key policy officials who attended from the Crown Commercial Service; DHSC; Department of Health, NI; House of Commons Library; and The Scottish Government - as well as parliamentary pass-holders from the House of Lords.
