This conference looked at priorities for policy and industry practice in the UK in the context of key developments affecting food labelling - including the Government’s Tackling Obesity strategy.
We are pleased to have been able to include keynote contributions from senior speakers including Jim Cathcart, Policy Director, UKHospitality; Christopher Conder, Team Leader, Market Interventions and Labelling for Animal Welfare, Defra; Sarah Cunningham, Team Leader, Food Information to Consumers, Defra; and Rebecca Sudworth, Director of Policy, Food Standards Agency.
Delegates considered what was needed to prepare the hospitality industry for the implementation of Natasha’s Law, which came into force in October 2021, and the introduction of calorie labelling as part of the Government’s drive to tackle obesity, as well as wider issues for food safety.
Further areas for discussion included:
- the role of labelling in food safety and standards
- dovetailing with wider public health, animal welfare, and environmental goals
- the future outlook for food labelling across the supply chain
- priorities for future trade and independent geographical indications schemes
The discussion brought together stakeholders with key policy officials from CAFRE; DAERA, NI; Defra; DIT; DHSC; the Drinking Water Inspectorate; the Food Standards Agency; Food Standards Scotland; The Scottish Government; and the Welsh Government - as well as parliamentary pass-holders from the House of Commons.
