This conference examined key current priorities for film and television production in the UK.

Delegates discussed what is needed - including from government policy and support - to build on positive trends that have been experienced by the industry, both domestically and in helping grow international markets.

It was also a timely opportunity to look at next steps for the Broadcasting Sector White Paper, as well as the future direction of wider policy affecting film and TV under new political leadership.

Overall, sessions in the agenda looked at:

  • the outlook: market dynamics and trends - learning from policy interventions during the pandemic - taking forward new ways of working - maintaining the momentum of recovery post-pandemic
  • commissioning and production: trends - developing markets - investment priorities and sources - growth outside the South East - developing the UK’s production and post-production base
  • PSBs: their future role alongside other content channels
  • addressing skills shortages: training and internships - career pathways - diversity and inclusion - competition for talent - immigration policy and international recruitment
  • global competitiveness: priorities for international producers and platforms - maintaining the UK’s position as a production base
  • exports: the way forward for growing the global reach of UK content and production

We were pleased to be able to include keynote sessions with Sean Clarke, Managing Director, Aardman Animations; Ralph Lee, Chief Executive Officer, BBC Studios Productions; Neil Peplow, Director of Industry and International Affairs, British Film Institute; and Adrian Wootton, Chief Executive Officer, British Film Commission.

The conference was an opportunity for stakeholders to consider the issues alongside key policy officials who attended from DCMS; DIT; and HMRC - as well as parliamentary pass-holders from the House of Commons.
