This conference examined next steps for energy code reform in the UK and modernising system governance, including the way forward for supporting market innovation and the measures that can be taken to simplify codes, drive industry competition, and overcome barriers to entry.

It was an opportunity to consider the measures outlined in the Government’s Energy White Paper and what they mean for energy code reform and system modernisation. Delegates also considered key issues for how Ofgem can work towards the Government’s objectives around energy policy and code reform.

There was discussion on the Government response to the recent consultation on energy code reform, as well as the review of Great Britain’s energy system operation by Ofgem, and how these developments affect priorities for energy codes in the UK.

The conference took place during a period of significant turbulence in wholesale energy costs and resource access for the UK, and was a timely opportunity for delegates to consider how policymakers and industry can develop stronger resilience across retail markets, energy generation, and system operation - as well as the opportunities policy and energy code reform can present for enhancing long-term energy security.

We were pleased to be able to include keynote contributions including:

  • Assessing the future of code management duties - from Angela Love, Director, Future Markets and Engagement, Elexon
  • Regulatory priorities for code framework design, flexibility, and support for new business models - from David Hall, Head of Industry Codes and Licensing, Ofgem
  • Energy code rule reform in the UK and ensuring policy objectives meet long-term energy system priorities - from Dr Sean Winchester, Head of Energy Code Governance, BEIS
