This conference brought stakeholders, regulators and policymakers together to examine the development, regulation and provision of degree apprenticeships in England.
It took place in light of recent ministerial calls for the further development of degree apprenticeship offers from HEIs, as well as Universities UK’s release of a 10-point plan for apprenticeships, and the OfS’ ongoing development of the Equality of Opportunity Risk Register.
Delegates considered the expansion of existing offers, the establishment of new courses and partnerships with employers, and options for the creation of new routes into apprenticeships in professions contributing to the development of the green economy.
Discussion also examined the degree apprenticeship pipeline, priorities for establishing clear progression pathways from earlier study, and what is needed in careers guidance and outreach to inform students, schools and parents about the opportunities available.
Further sessions assessed what regulatory, cost and funding changes need to be considered in order to remove barriers for new providers, and how those providers can gain insight into best practice, and the creation and management of degree apprenticeships.
Overall, the agenda included discussion on:

- social mobility: improving outreach for and uptake by those from underrepresented backgrounds - integrating apprenticeships and technical education into APPs - supporting retention and progression
- retention and progression: financial and pastoral support - working with employers, charities and families to improve retention - tackling high drop-out rates - establishing clear progression pathways
The conference was an opportunity for stakeholders to consider the issues alongside key policy officials who attended from the Cabinet Office; DBT; DfE; DWP; GLD; HMRC; MOJ; Ofcom and Ofsted.
