This conference examineed the next steps for data policy and regulation in the UK - as well as the future of international data relationships and the way forward for improving the use of data to boost the economy.


Delegates discussed options for the UK in the context of the evolving international data landscape and measures in the Government response to the Data: a new direction consultation.


It was a timely opportunity to discuss the direction of government policy under a new prime minister, and following the announcement by the Secretary of State at the Conservative Party Conference that the Government is pausing the Data Protection and Digital Information Bill and considering a UK replacement to the GDPR.


Further sessions considered:


  • the use of data to drive research, innovation, and economic growth, and to improve the delivery of public services
  • the future of data rights and control, security, exchange, responsibilities, legislation, and regulation in the context of ICO reform

Overall, sessions in the agenda looked at:


  • the international data landscape - International Data Exchange, security and use - options for the UK
  • developments in UK data policy  - the future of the Data Protection and Digital Information Bill and GDPR - stakeholder priorities - innovation and growth - data rights and responsibilities
  • next steps for regulation
  • evolving role of data in the UK - tackling societal problems - supporting innovation and economic growth - setting an example in responsible use

The chairs are Charles Courtenay, the Earl of Devon, Partner, Michelmores; and Daniel Zeichner MP, Chair, All-Party Parliamentary Group on Data Analytics.


The conference was an opportunity for stakeholders to consider the issues alongside key policy officials who attended from the BEIS; Cabinet Office; CMA; DAERA, NI; DCMS; Department for the Economy, NI; DfT; DHSC; DMU; Dstl; DWP; GLD; Home Office; House of Commons Library; IPO; The Scottish Government; and the Welsh Government - as well as parliamentary pass holders from the House of Lords.
