This conference discussed priorities for addressing the immediate and long-term impacts of cost of living pressures on health inequalities and public health.

Delegates examined the latest evidence and lived experiences of those facing economic difficulties, alongside strategies for mitigating pressures on public health, including the use of data, population health methods, and voluntary and community support.

It was an opportunity to assess approaches to addressing widening health inequalities, particularly in the context of government policy aimed at reducing regional disparities, in addition to wider local government, third sector and stakeholder initiatives.

Attendees considered the support required by those disproportionately affected by cost of living pressures, as well as the way forward for managing NHS care delivery in the face of economic hardship.

Overall, areas for discussion included:

  • evidence: assessing the latest research and lived experience - effects of economic pressures on people’s health
  • data: use of analytical and population health methods - identifying those at increased risk of health issues, or who are encountering difficulties in accessing treatment
  • community support: latest developments and thinking regarding local strategies - collaboration in community and voluntary sectors to alleviate pressures on public health
  • health inequalities: supporting people disproportionately impacted by the cost of living crisis
  • mitigating pressures on public health:
    • implementing initiatives to improve access to food and heating - promoting healthy decision-making
    • improving access to heating and other essential services
    • better informing the public on the availability of services - driving preventative health approaches - improving access to treatment
  • integrated care systems: addressing the impacts on health outcomes of increased costs within ICSs
  • NHS care delivery: management in the context of increased economic pressures

We are pleased to have been able to include keynote contributions from Saffron Cordery, Deputy Chief Executive, NHS Providers; Hashum Mahmood, Senior Policy Advisor, Population Health, NHS Confederation; and Dr Parth Patel, Senior Research Fellow, IPPR.
