This conference focused on next steps for clinical research following the pandemic.

Stakeholders and policymakers discussed proposals put forward by the MHRA earlier this year for improving transparency, efficiency and patient involvement in research.

It also followed The Future of Clinical Research Delivery: 2022 to 2025 implementation plan published by the DHSC in June, which is aimed at developing best use of health data, technology and increase patient participation.

Delegates looked at the way forward for harnessing new approaches to data use in clinical research following the publication of the Goldacre Review - Better, broader, safer: using health data for research and analysis.

We were pleased to be able to include keynote sessions with Professor Ben Goldacre, Lead, Goldacre Review; and Director, Bennett Institute for Applied Data Science, Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences, University of Oxford; and Dr Jennifer Harris, Director of Research Policy, ABPI.

The conference was also a timely opportunity to consider the future direction of government policy relating to clinical research.

Stakeholders considered the issues alongside key policy officials who attended from the DHSC; MHRA; Department of Health, NI; BEIS; OLS; and The Scottish Government.

Areas for discussion in the agenda included:

  • policy priorities: advancing clinical research in the UK
  • learning from the pandemic: applying lessons learnt to support optimisation of clinical trials - developing capacity to meet research demand
  • developing clinical research within the NHS: supporting patient and clinician engagement - growing the research workforce - developing digital infrastructure - making use of real-world data
  • regulation: next steps for the clinical research sector
  • delivery of clinical research:
    • developing clinical research networks - collaboration between trusts in building evidence bases
    • improving representation in research and wider priorities for tackling health inequalities
    • working with industry partners on delivery and access to innovation
    • digital trials, data exchange, security and priorities for making best use of technology
  • The Goldacre Review: the way forward for new approaches to data use in clinical research, and the creation and use of Trusted Research Environments
