This conference focused on conditions that cause chronic pain.

Delegates discussed the next steps for diagnosis, treatment and management - and best practice, innovation and priorities for supporting people living with its effects.

It was an opportunity to evaluate developments including:

  • the updates to NICE’s guidance for chronic pain management
  • development of integrated care systems in the context of the Health and Care Bill

Delegates examined the development of integrated healthcare in local communities and best practice for delivering patient-centred care.

They also considered provision of the support required for the health workforce to deliver quality care and pain management for patients.

Further sessions looked at alternative approaches to chronic pain management including psychological therapies, social prescribing and complementary medicine, with NICE commencing medical cannabis clinical trials for people with chronic pain.

Overall, areas for discussion included priorities and next steps for:

  • improving diagnosis and treatment - understanding risk factors - approaches to prevention - long-term management - innovative treatment programmes - regulation and guidance
  • developing person-centred community care - supporting patient wellbeing - access to mental health services - widening awareness and understanding

We are pleased to have been able to include keynote sessions with Dr Cathy Stannard, Clinical Lead, Pain Transformation Programme, NHS Gloucestershire CCG; and Topic Advisor, NICE Guidelines for Chronic Pain Management; Dr Andreas Goebel, Chair, Pain Research Institute; and Reader in Pain Medicine, University of Liverpool; Dr Neha Issar-Brown, Director of Research, Versus Arthritis; and Professor Roger Knaggs, Vice President, British Pain Society; and Associate Professor in Clinical Pharmacy, University of Nottingham.
