Next steps for cardiovascular research, prevention and care in England

TO BE PUBLISHED April 2027

Starting from: £99 + VAT
Format: DOWNLOADABLE PDF

This conference will consider next steps for cardiovascular research, prevention and care in England. Areas for discussion include early implementation of the Cardiovascular Disease Modern Service Framework and the Prevention Accelerators, and approaches to coordinating primary and specialist care, public health, neighbourhood services and community pharmacy.

It will bring together stakeholders and policymakers to examine priorities following publication of the MSF in July 2026 - the first of the modern service frameworks committed to in the 10 Year Health Plan for England - and its ambition to reduce premature deaths from heart disease and stroke by a quarter within a decade. Delegates will consider what will be required to translate the framework’s priorities into delivery across ICBs, local authorities and local systems. The planned agenda will explore accountability for progress, the use of national and equity measures, and the commissioning, contractual and financial arrangements needed to support sustained improvement.

Planned sessions will assess practical requirements for improving prevention and care, including diagnostic capacity, early identification and management of cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic risk, treatment optimisation and adherence, and access to timely acute treatment and rehabilitation. Attendees will discuss workforce capacity, clinical integration, the potential for population-health data, digital diagnostics, AI, remote monitoring and other technologies to support risk stratification and personalised care, and how services can reach underserved populations where detection, treatment and outcomes continue to lag.

Research, evidence and innovation will also be discussed, including approaches to evidence generation and the measurement of clinical and equity outcomes during early implementation. Delegates will examine the use of CVDPREVENT and real-world evidence to identify unmet need and evaluate new approaches, the roles of the NHS, NIHR, academia, charities and life sciences and technology partners in developing and adopting new diagnostics, medicines and models of care, and approaches to demonstrating value and strengthening sustainable investment in prevention.

Overall areas for discussion include:

  • implementation, accountability & system incentives:
    • ICB and local authority accountability for outcomes - national CVD MSF delivery board, regional assurance and local measures of progress
    • alignment of commissioning, contractual and financial levers with prevention priorities - approaches to using savings from reduced acute activity
    • resourcing implementation - prioritisation within existing resources and the forthcoming MSF delivery plan
  • case-finding, treatment optimisation & adherence:
    • identifying undiagnosed hypertension, high cholesterol, CKD and diabetes risk - reaching the “missing millions” - the role of the NHS Health Check
    • treatment to target - lipid lowering, blood-pressure control, SGLT2 inhibitors and four-pillar heart-failure therapy
    • access to semaglutide for people with established CVD - eligibility, capacity and links with weight management services
    • improving uptake and adherence across working-age, deprived and underserved populations
  • diagnostics, data & digital delivery:
    • community diagnostics, imaging and point-of-care testing - capacity, access and routes closer to home
    • population-health management, AI-supported risk prediction, genomics, wearables and remote monitoring
    • data quality, interoperability and use of CVDPREVENT and real-world evidence to identify variation and target intervention
  • neighbourhood care, workforce & population health:
    • respective roles of general practice, community pharmacy, specialists, public health and neighbourhood teams
    • workforce capacity, skills and clinical leadership - multidisciplinary models and support for intensified prevention activity
    • Prevention Accelerators - implementation and early learning from the first five sites and scope for wider adoption
    • smoking cessation, obesity and wider determinants - integrating clinical prevention with population-health approaches
  • inequalities, acute pathways & rehabilitation:
    • ethnic, deprivation, age, sex and geographic variation - applying proportionate universalism in local delivery
    • variation in STEMI and stroke pathways - timely diagnosis, treatment and transfer
    • access to cardiac and stroke rehabilitation - hybrid and digital models, uptake and long-term outcomes
  • research, adoption & sustainable innovation:
    • priorities for NIHR, academic and charity research - evidence gaps in prevention, detection, treatment and service delivery - the NIHR Inequalities Challenge Consortium
    • routes from research and evaluation to routine adoption - roles of NICE, MHRA and Health Innovation Networks
    • partnerships with life sciences, MedTech and digital health - demonstrating value, supporting procurement and scaling proven innovation
