This conference discussed the priorities for improving the prevention, detection and treatment of cardiovascular disease.

It was an opportunity to discuss what is required to recover diagnosis rates and catch up with health checks in light of the pandemic.

The discussion followed the recent speech from the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care on healthcare reform in which he makes a commitment to making the healthcare system work harder to prevent cardiovascular disease, as well as setting out the expectation that integrated care systems will publish delivery plans for non-communicable diseases, starting with cardiovascular disease.

Delegates also looked at the workforce support and best practice for the effective delivery of more integrated and personalised care for cardiovascular patients, and the ways this can improve outcomes, as well as the opportunities presented for meeting long-term ambitions through increased focus on preventative approaches and tackling health inequalities.

The conference also looked at the next steps for funding and investment in cardiovascular research, innovation and collaboration following cardiovascular disease being identified as a key challenge in the Life Sciences Vision.

Areas of discussion included:

  • care pathways - next steps for development - the collaboration and leadership required to drive forward prevention
  • Office for Health Improvement and Disparities - its role - potential for a National Prevention Service ◦ wider issues for public health affecting CVD
  • NHS Long Term Plan - progress & next steps, with cardiovascular disease a clinical priority - prevention targets for heart attacks, strokes and dementia cases
  • population health - knowledge exchange - use of data - addressing regional variation - targeting those at risk
