This conference examined the key priorities for the future of cancer prevention, diagnosis, care, and treatment as the Government develops a 10-year Cancer Plan for England.

It was an opportunity for stakeholders and policymakers to assess priorities for the new Health Secretary and the direction of policy affecting cancer.

We expected discussion on the extent to which funding and policy initiatives being put forward can address current challenges - looking at ABCD priorities, the Plan for Patients with proposals to address wait times and backlog, and the mini-budget, which removed the national insurance health and social care levy.

Delegates also examined priorities for the next stage of the elective care backlog delivery plan, including meeting demand as waiting times for new referrals increase - as well as what can be learned from the success in clearing the longest waiting times for patients.
Further sessions considered the future for patient access to innovative cancer treatments and the impact of new regulatory approaches for the evaluation of innovative technologies.

Overall, areas for discussion included:

  • the 10-year Cancer Plan for England: stakeholder perspectives on next steps in its development - priorities for moving forward from the impact of the pandemic on cancer services
  • screening programmes: progress in recovering services and options for future delivery - developing public awareness
  • reducing cancer waiting times: options for increasing capacity - priorities for diagnostics, infrastructure, and the use of digital technology - building workforce resilience and retention
  • health outcomes: improving early diagnosis and access to innovation - use of data and developing prevention programmes to meet local need - addressing accessibility and health inequalities
  • personalised care: the future for patient engagement and involvement in their own care plans - how this should look within cancer care in England

We are pleased to have been able to include keynote sessions with Eve Byrne, Director of Advocacy, Macmillan Cancer Support; Professor Anne Mackie, Director of Programmes, UK National Screening Committee; Professor Bernard Rachet, Professor of Cancer Epidemiology, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine; and Ian Walker, Executive Director of Policy, Information and Communications, Cancer Research UK.

The conference was an opportunity for stakeholders to consider the issues alongside key policy officials who attended from the DHSC; MHRA; OHID; Department of Health, NI; UK National Screening Committee; OLS; and the Welsh Government.
