This conference examined the priorities for building safety and management in England, with the Building Safety Act entering into statute from April, and with the Government’s new legislative programme laid out in the Queen’s Speech.

It was an opportunity for delegates to assess key issues emerging from the legislation including:

  • building standards moving forward and their implementation
  • the new regulatory framework
  • responsibility and accountability in the development process
  • fire and risk protection
  • ensuring the safety and health of residents

Sessions in the agenda focused on:

  • priorities for the new Building Safety Regulator
  • the new regulatory framework - stakeholder perspectives - implementation - emerging issues - compliance - competence and standards - fire safety reforms - funding
  • issues for construction and development - safety - regulation - materials - best practice - possible implications for the sector and ongoing and future housing construction projects
  • residents and property owners - assurance of safety - key issues for design, retrofit and risk - engagement between residents and property owners - role of the New Homes Ombudsman service
  • policy priorities for building safety and management

We were pleased to be able to include keynote sessions with Peter Baker, Chief Inspector of Buildings, Health and Safety Executive; and Lorna Stimpson, Chief Executive, Local Authority, Building Control.

The conference was an opportunity for stakeholders to consider the issues alongside key policy officials who attended from HMRC; the OPSS; DfE; the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Ireland; ORR; and the Welsh Government - as well as parliamentary pass-holders from the House of Commons.
