This conference examined policy priorities for improving the use of data across the economy and next steps for the National Data Strategy.

It was a timely opportunity for discussion following the Government’s response to the consultation on the National Data Strategy and as it outlines plans to consult on the future of the country’s data regime, including on the role of the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO).

We were pleased to be able to include keynote contributions from:

  • Stephen Bonner, Executive Director, Regulatory Futures and Innovation, ICO
  • Phil Earl, Deputy Director, Data Strategy, Implementation and Evidence, DCMS
  • Fedelma Good, Director, PricewaterhouseCoopers
  • Jon Nash, Fellow, Demos
  • Sarah Snelson, Director, Frontier Economics

The agenda brought out latest thinking on:

  • growing the data economy in the UK and the key challenges in enabling the flow of data
  • the future market for the use of data and how it can drive service design and economic growth
  • the future for regulation and data protection policies and the role of the Information Commissioner’s Office
  • next steps for the National Data Strategy

The discussion brought together stakeholders with policy officials who attended from BEIS; the Cabinet Office; the CMA; the DCMS; the DfT; the DIT; the DHSC; the DTSL; the DWP; the Government Digital Service; the GLD; the Geospatial Commission; HMRC; the Home Office; the ICO; the IPO; the NAO; the NCA; Ofcom; UK Space Agency; and the Welsh Government - as well as parliamentary pass-holders from the Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology.
