This conference examined key developments and priorities for policy on active travel in England.
It brought together key stakeholders and policymakers to discuss priorities for:
- the newly established Active Travel England Executive Agency - which is tasked with improving the standard of cycling and walking infrastructure
- the Cycling and Walking Investment Strategy 2 (CWIS2) - the 4-year statutory investment plan due to be published later this year
Areas for discussion included:
- CWIS1 - impact so far ◦ learning for development of CWIS2 ◦ how funding has been allocated
- CWIS2 - development & improvement of future schemes ◦ building accessibility into design & planning of future transport systems ◦ supporting active travel as a first choice
- policy - changes to the Highway Code ◦ government targets for cycling & walking ◦ implementation issues ◦ investment priorities ◦ achieving a world-class active travel network
- local strategies - active travel infrastructure ◦ development of local solutions ◦ case studies from combined authorities and sub-national transport bodies
We were pleased to be able to include keynote sessions with: Rupert Furness, Deputy Director, Active Travel, Department for Transport; Dr Rachel Aldred, Professor of Transport; and Director, Active Travel Academy, University of Westminster; Christian Bodé, Director Roads, AECOM; Hannah Dines, Paralympic trike racer, and activist; and Helen Littler, Chair, Walking & Cycling Community of Practice, Institution of Civil Engineers.
There were case studies from: Dr Will Norman, Greater London Authority; Adam Tranter, West Midlands Combined Authority; and Jo Ward, Kirklees Council.
The conference was an opportunity for stakeholders to consider the issues alongside key policy officials who attended from the DfT; Defra; NAO; and the Welsh Government.
