Delegates discussed the priorities for ARIA’s organisation, funding, and mission - including what is needed to translate its work into beneficial products and capabilities, as well as issues around accountability and oversight.
The conference also provided an opportunity to examine wider questions, including ARIA’s place within the UK research landscape and around its interaction with existing research bodies.
The discussion took place with the ARIA Bill awaiting Royal Assent, and the appointment of its first CEO, as well as the confirmation of £800m in funding in the Spending Review.
We were pleased to be able to include keynote contributions from Sarah Hodgetts, Deputy Director for Science, Research and Innovation, Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy; David Rogers, Deputy Director, Strategy Investment, UK Research and Innovation; Dr Jennifer Gerbi, Deputy Director for Technology, ARPA-E; and Dr Alan Bernstein, President & CEO, CIFAR.
The conference was an opportunity for stakeholders to consider the issues alongside key policy officials who attended from BEIS; Dstl; DCMS; DfE; Defra; DIT; the FCDO; the Department for the Economy, NI; DfT; DAERA, NI; DHSC; GO-Science; HMRC; HM Treasury; the IPO; MHRA; the NIRO; the OLS; UKSA; NCA; The Scottish Government; and the Welsh Government - as well as parliamentary pass-holders from the House of Lords and POST.
