This timely seminar focused on priorities for education technology in England and considered key issues for schools, suppliers and policymakers.
It took place in the context of increased emphasis being placed on education technology from the Department for Education - including its potential to relieve teacher workload pressures, renewed focus from Government on improving digital skills, in both the Industrial Strategy and the UK Digital Strategy. The seminar also followed the initial launch of EDUCATE, a UCL-led project backed by European Regional Development Funding, bringing together the education sector and edtech companies to promote UK-produced edtech products and services.
Key areas for discussion included:
- Support for schools - in the procurement of tech products and services, and in assessing value for money;
- Becta - the impact of its closure, the future role for local authorities in edtech procurement, and implications for the growth in academies;
- Workload - the role technology can play in reducing pressures on teachers;
- Technology and teachers - opportunities for increasing engagement in edtech, improving the confidence of school staff when using technology, and the role for edtech visionaries in schools;
- Maximising learning outcomes - best practice in the utilisation of edtech, and addressing challenges for measuring its effectiveness; and
- Innovation in edtech - looking at the most recent developments in the field, and in the use of Artificial Intelligence.
