Timed to follow both the release of the TEF’s year 2 results and year 3 specifications, this timely seminar looked at the next steps for developing and reforming the framework, as well as future priorities for its implementation in HEIs.
It was also timed to follow the TEF entering the third year of its implementation and the granting of Royal Assent to the Higher Education and Research Act.
The seminar followed the Government’s announcement of subject level pilot specification and delegates discussed the possible composition of pilots, together with subject case studies and how the TEF can be developed to demonstrate diversity across the teaching provision at UK universities. They also considered potential challenges of delivering this stage to UK HEIs, such as the impact of the subject categorisation system on ratings and how a good institutional score in year 2 might dissuade institutions from partaking in year 3.
Further sessions assessed the released results from year 2 of the exercise, discussing the composition of framework metrics and areas for potential reform and development, as detailed by the Minister - Jo Johnson MP, in his announcement. Discussion focused on the state of current metrics of assessment, as well as the forthcoming enhancement of graduate outcomes data and the proposal to include a new metric on value for money.
