Following a number of high profile labour exploitation cases in the UK and internationally, this seminar assessed options for policy and stakeholder action in tackling modern slavery. Delegates discussed the strategy presented in the independent Anti-slavery Commissioner’s annual review, published in October 2016, which laid down priorities for victim protection and the application of the National Referral Mechanism (NRM).
Further sessions examined prosecution and sentencing of offenders, as well as the way forward for further international cooperation against human trafficking following the UK's vote to leave the EU. Additional areas for discussion included transparency in supply chains and the anti-slavery statement, as well as victim identification and protection; including the future for the National Referral Mechanism following pilot schemes in 2016.
Speakers and other delegates were an informed group including Members of both Houses of Parliament, senior government officials involved in this area of public policy, together with business groups, local authority representatives, charities, policing, legal practitioners and academics, as well as members of the press.
