This seminar brought together key policymakers and stakeholders to discuss next steps for increasing participation in sport amongst children and improving the quality of Physical Education (PE) in schools.

It followed the announcement of the £100m healthy pupils capital programme, expected to be introduced in 2018, to improve sports facilities and promote healthy lifestyles, in light of evidence that more than a third of children aged 10-11 are overweight or obese.

Delegates discussed the priorities for schools in implementing measures contained in the Childhood Obesity Plan - including the introduction of a healthy schools rating and the doubling of the Primary PE and Sport Premium from September 2017 - as well as recommendations from Ofsted on good practice.

Further sessions examined how the provision of PE in schools can be improved, and how physical activity can be better incorporated into the classroom - following the report from the All-Party Parliamentary Group on a Fit and Healthy Childhood calling for the national curriculum to include examples of how physical activity can be included in traditional learning.

Attendees also discussed the challenges for schools in increasing engagement in sport amongst underrepresented groups and improving PE provision for disabled children.
