In light of wider moves to reduce childhood obesity levels, this seminar assessed the next steps for delivering healthy school and early years food environments in England.
This seminar took place with the Ofsted-monitored voluntary healthy rating scheme for primary schools being introduced from September 2017 - as set out in the Obesity plan - which will assess how well schools promote and support pupils' knowledge of healthy eating. It also follows the commitment of £415 million funding from the Soft Drinks Industry Levy to support healthy lifestyle activities in schools from 2018.
Sessions assessed the most effective ways in which education, industry and government initiatives can promote healthy eating and increase food standards in schools and early years settings, particularly focusing on possible measures to ensure academies and free schools also demonstrate a clear commitment to compliance, reducing the availability of HFSS food products in close proximity to school settings. With recent political focus on free school meals, further sessions looked at priorities for ensuring all children have access to nutritious meals during the school day; and the future role of breakfast clubs.
