Mental health in the workplace - improving support for employers and employees

December 2017

This conference was a timely opportunity to consider the further steps that can be taken by government, employers and others to improve mental health support in the workplace.

It followed the publication of the independent review into mental health and employers, which found that poor mental health costs the UK economy between £74 billion and £99 billion each year, and called for greater transparency among employers and for further action to improve the recognition and management of mental health conditions.

Delegates discussed the challenges for implementing the review’s recommendations - including how to encourage employers to adopt the ‘mental health core standards’ - and the further changes that could be made by Government in this important area of employment policy. Sessions examined the steps that can be taken to better equip line managers with the tools and training to best support employees and further action for tackling discrimination and stigma.

The conference brought together policymakers with key stakeholders including representatives of employers and trade unions, mental health professionals and campaign groups, lawyers, members of the HR profession, occupational health providers, academics, and members of the national and trade press.
