Delegates at this seminar focused on the future of the legal education and training framework in England and Wales. It was timed to assess latest reforms being undertaken in this area by key legal regulators - including the Solicitors Regulation Authority’s Training for Tomorrow initiative, and the Bar Standards Board’s Future Bar Training programme - and brought out latest thinking on what more can be done to develop consistency and standards across the framework, as well as improve diversity and access to the profession.
In particular, delegates had the opportunity to discuss the SRA's proposal for a centralised Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) - which is scheduled for implementation in 2020 - and its possible impact on maintaining standards and competitiveness, as well as its implications for cost and access for students.
Further sessions looked at the future availability and remuneration of training contracts, the framework for continuing professional development, and the development of alternative training pathways - including the growth of legal apprenticeships. This conference brought together senior government officials involved in this area of public policy, together with universities, training providers, law firms, chambers and legal businesses, as well as commentators, academics and think tanks.
