The seminar considered the way ahead for UK food security policy, in the context of Brexit negotiations, wider international agreements and domestic policy.
It followed the announcement of an Agricultural Bill aimed at supporting UK farmers after the UK leaves the EU and the publication of FSA’s proposals for future food regulation, which include plans for an enhanced system of registration for all food businesses to better identify and manage risk across the food chain.
Overall areas of discussion included:
- The implications of Brexit on food security - including the impact of future trade policy on both the UK’s food market and access to international markets, and meeting global commitments;
- Supporting domestic food production and manufacturing - including the future of domestic agriculture funding, safeguarding food standards and the future role of environmental stewardship within the sector; and
- The way forward for UK agri-food policy - driving innovation, the impact of regulatory changes and supporting a vibrant agri-food sector.
