This seminar discussed the next steps for England’s examination system, its performance and future shape, and key priorities for Ofqual.
It followed Ofsted’s emphasis on the importance of balancing the demands of the exam system with the wider curriculum, the Government response to its consultation on primary assessment and came with reform ongoing to both GCSEs and A-Levels. Stakeholders, policymakers and regulators assessed the developing role of technology in assessment and exams - looking at its potential impact on examiners and teachers’ workloads - measures that can be taken to ensure effective delivery, and how it might need to evolve.
Further sessions focused on examination marking, in light of Ofqual launching a review into teachers’ involvement in developing exam papers and the Education Select Committee identifying public examinations as an area of focus for this Parliament. Delegates also considered steps that can be taken to attract high quality and experienced examiners, measures that can be taken to improve consistency of exams, and the place of e-marking in the system.
