The next steps for carbon capture, usage and storage policy in the UK - investment, government support and sector confidence

This conference will be a timely opportunity to discuss the future of carbon capture, usage and storage (CCUS) technologies in the UK - including funding, the direction of policy, and the way forward for making large-scale CCUS a reality in the future.

We expect discussion to reflect issues around uncertainty for the industry, and the impact on investment and innovation, following the Government reaffirming its commitment to develop CCUS technology in the Clean Growth Strategy, but cutting the budget to kick-start the industry from £1bn to £100m.

Delegates will assess what is now needed for the industry to secure investment, including the role of £20m BEIS recently allocated to CCUS demonstration projects and up to £315m in the Industrial Energy Transformation Fund announced in the Autumn Budget.

They will also consider wider issues around confidence in the sector following the launch of the Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Committee’s inquiry into the future of CCUS, and conflicting advice from the Committee on Climate Change and National Infrastructure Commission on the need for CCUS.

Further sessions examine planning issues and the prospects for making the technology more commercially viable at scale, including reducing costs and supporting innovation - and latest thinking on the challenges for retrofitting the technology on existing industrial sites and on developing the cost-effectiveness of carbon storage in helping meet climate change targets.

The agenda also looks at the opportunities for international relationships in developing CCUS.
