The conference explored the next steps for AP in England. Delegates discussed key themes in the government-commissioned independent review into school exclusions.

It also examined key aspects of the Education Select Committee’s recently published inquiry, highlighting ‘the scandal of ever increasing exclusions’.

Delegates also explored the need for early intervention to decrease the risk of excluded pupils being groomed by ‘county lines’ drug gangs.

Further sessions discussed the Government’s vision for AP, Creating Opportunity for All, and its focus on improving quality and meeting individual needs, developing best practice and partnerships.

In order to tackle the rising number of exclusions amongst pupils with SEND and mental health concerns, delegates also examined the need to improve the identification of pupils with SEND and the importance of training teachers to successfully support pupils, as well as the need to recognise and manage mental health needs of pupils more effectively.

Delegates also discussed the next steps for improving outcomes for children and young people when leaving AP and transition to other settings, including training, higher education and employment.
