This timely seminar brought together key policymakers and stakeholders to consider the next steps for the UK food, drink and farming sectors as the UK moves to new international relationships in light of Brexit.

Delegates discussed the priorities for innovation, productivity and workforce skills across food production and manufacturing, with a particular emphasis on agriculture, as well as the potential impact of the Industrial Strategy white paper and the creation of the Food and Drink Sector Council. This included discussion on creating a fairer supply chain and the role of retailers in translating this message to consumers. They also looked at the next steps for research, with discussion on funding and opportunities to promote collaboration with industry and encouraging young people into the sectors.

Sessions also considered ways to encourage the growth of exports internationally, opportunities to access new markets and international trade agreements, including the possibility of free trade deals.  Delegates also discussed post-Brexit scenarios for UK agri-trade policy, and their implications for both the sector and future trading relationships with trading partners . Discussion highlighted the challenges and opportunities for promoting British products internationally, and creating ‘Brand Britain’ as a signifier of quality, with case studies from Wales and Scotland.

Further sessions looked at the challenges for delivering a ‘Green Brexit’ in a sustainable way, in light of the launch of the 25 Year Environment Plan, and safeguarding food standards post-Brexit.
