This timely seminar brought together stakeholders and policymakers to discuss the future of initial teacher education (ITE) in England.
The seminar provided delegates with the opportunity to discuss key priorities for the future shape of ITE following the publication of the Department for Education’s response to its consultation on strengthening QTS and improving career progression for teachers.
Delegates assessed the potential impact of proposed measures - including the introduction of an extended induction period for new teachers of two years, a structured early career content framework and the introduction of a formal mentor for new teachers - as well as further action which might be taken in this important area.
Further sessions assessed the viability of calls from the universities and the Chartered College of Teaching for tuition fees to be waived for trainee teachers, as well as discussing steps that might be taken to ensure accountability of ITE providers and examining best practice examples of ITE provision in schools - both in the UK and internationally.
