Following the publication of Sir Andrew Carter's Review into Initial Teacher Training (ITT), this seminar considered the future of teacher training provision and practice in England.
Delegates discussed the outcomes of the Review and its recommendations, such as proposals for the commissioning of a sector body to develop core content for ITT, as well as considering government's response. This conference also examined the existing structure of teacher training, including school-based (SCITT) and university-based provision, as well as the impact of schemes such as School Direct. The piloting of University training schools (UTSs), scheduled for September 2015, were also considered.
Further sessions focused on the content of teacher training courses and addressed concerns surrounding the recruitment of graduates, especially in shortage subjects, such as Physics, and how to improve the retention of newly qualified teachers (NQTs).
