This seminar considered the future of the courts and tribunals service in England and Wales. It was timed to consider key challenges ahead for the five year programme of investment in the courts and tribunals system - set out by Government in the last Parliament - which aimed to develop efficiency via the use of technology, modernised working practices and an improved estate.
The discussion also came amid wide-ranging legislative and procedural reform impacting on court services, including consultation on court fees, the introduction of Single Family and County Courts, and the Criminal Justice and Courts Act.
The seminar brought together key policymakers with stakeholders working across the court estate - including the judiciary, lawyers, advocates and expert witnesses - alongside private service providers, IT and infrastructure specialists, service-user groups, trade bodies and commentators. Delegates had a particular opportunity to consider developments in the drive towards digital courts, challenges ahead for a reorganised and centralised estate following court closures, and priorities moving forward for ensuring a user-friendly, responsive and accessible service, particularly for victims, witnesses, consumers and businesses.
