Following the publication of the Perkins Review Progress Report, delegates at this conference assessed progress made by the sector to close the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) skills gap by encouraging more young people to study these subjects and take up careers in related industries.
The conference also coincided with the Government's Your Life campaign, announced by the Chancellor in May 2014, which aims to increase the number of young people, particularly women, studying STEM subjects by 50% over the next three years.
Sessions examined progress made since the original Perkins Review and considered the remaining challenges for Government, education providers, industry and others. Further discussion included ways in which education providers can work with industry and learned societies to encourage growth in STEM admissions and recruitment, including improved careers guidance, more work placements and greater industry-university links in developing undergraduate and postgraduate course content.
Attendees included key policymakers and government officials, alongside senior representatives from schools, colleges and universities, as well as research councils, learned societies, charities, businesses and sector bodies from R&D-intensive industries and other interested parties.
