This seminar focused on the practical steps that could be taken to help raise the attainment of socio-economically disadvantaged pupils, as well as the impact so far of the Pupil Premium. It followed the Government's spending increase on the Pupil Premium, which provides additional funding for pupils from low-income or armed forces families or those in the care system.
Delegates also discussed recommendations in the Education Select Committee's report into the educational underachievement of white working class children, which called for an annual Ofsted report on Pupil Premium best practice, strategies to attract the staff to the most challenging schools, to better match funding with need; and for increased parental engagement in pupil learning.
Further areas for discussion included examples of effective use of the Pupil Premium in schools and how best practice can be better shared across all schools. Sessions also looked at further measures introduced by Government to address persistent attainment gaps in certain schools between disadvantaged pupils and their peers from wealthier backgrounds, including summer schools, the new Talented Leaders programme scheme, the draft admissions code that would allow pupils from low income backgrounds to be favoured in application processes and lessons that can be learnt from the London and Manchester City Challenges.
