Following the publication of Government's finalised reforms to secondary school accountability measures, this timely seminar provided an early opportunity to discuss their implications for schools and pupils.
Delegates discussed how the introduction of progress scores and the 'best 8 subjects' measure will affect schools' focus on disadvantaged and low-ability pupils, as well as their likely impact on 'coasting' schools.
They also considered related reforms to league tables, including publishing destination data for school-leavers and counting only students' first attempt at GCSEs, as well as the effect of reforms on entry patterns across subjects. The Government's proposal to introduce a requirement for all schools to publish information about their performance clearly on their website was also discussed.
Further sessions focused on policy options to improve schools' local accountability, and challenges around making schools where pupils make excellent progress exempt from Ofsted inspections.
