Attendees at this conference considered the future of the youth justice system in England and Wales. It was scheduled as policymakers took forward proposals from the Transforming Youth Custody consultation response - which sets out Government's ambitions to improve education and rehabilitation across youth custody - and was also timed to consider the Independent Parliamentarians' Inquiry into the Operation and Effectiveness of the Youth Court.
Sessions brought together key stakeholders - including criminal justice practitioners, service-user networks, local authorities and those working across private, voluntary and community sectors - with policymakers and judicial representatives to consider next steps for reform. Sessions were structured to bring out latest thinking on the future of the youth secure estate - with particular reference to Government proposals to better integrate service provision between custody and community - and also considered how the youth courts system can support wider crime prevention and rehabilitation, whilst also ensuring effective outcomes for victims and society.
