This seminar brought together key policymakers and stakeholders to assess Government's strategy to reduce net migration to tens of thousands by the end of the Parliament, following the introduction of the Immigration Bill. The seminar provided an opportunity to consider the significant legislative reforms contained within the Bill as it underwent the final stages of Parliamentary scrutiny, including wide-ranging changes to the enforcement and appeals processes.
Delegates considered the impact of the proposed reforms - most notably in relation to migrant access to health services, prevention of illegal working and streamlining the appeals process in immigration cases. Sessions also brought out latest thinking on issues related to immigrants and private rented housing, employment and preventing illegal immigrants from opening bank accounts in the UK. Those in attendance included lawyers, business groups, universities and colleges, local authorities, community advice services, and charities and campaign groups.
