This seminar was a timely opportunity to assess initiatives from Ofsted and Government designed to raise the attainment of pupils from all backgrounds. Discussion was informed by Ofsted's decennial Review of Urban Education and the related challenges for educational achievement in rural, northern and coastal areas. It took place as the Education Select Committee conducted an inquiry into underachievement in education by white working class children.
Delegates discussed ways in which 'coasting' schools could be incentivised to improve their performance, and how schools can better cater for highly able pupils in light of Ofsted's recent survey on schools' provision for the most able pupils. They also examined the impact of the Pupil Premium and a series of Government measures designed to support its effective use, as well as the 'summer schools' programme's effect upon the attainment of disadvantaged children.
